#BRINGBACK OUR GIRLS: 4 Months And 2 Days Later...(From A Blogger's Desk)

Its been 4 months and 2 days since over 200 girls were kidnapped in Chibok local government of Borno state.
Until the international community joined the clamor for the girls to be brought back about a month after the abduction, the Nigerian government seemed very lackadaisical about making solid effort to find the abducted girls and return them home.
The #Bringbackourgirls campaign then became a world wide phenomenon, even a fad of some sort, and it seemed some progress, albeit little was being made. News emerged of various countries pledging their support, renown negotiators being named and claims that the girls were seen, but still no serious headway has been made since the girls were kidnapped.

Hopes of immediate relief for victims of the Ebola Virus Disease following reports that doses of an experimental  drug,  nano-silver, had been delivered were dimmed yesterday after United States Food and Drug Administration said the drug is a pesticide and warned those claiming that it could prevent or treat Ebola to desist from doing so.

Silver has been used as antibacterial for centuries. Tiny silver particles known as nano-silver have controversially been incorporated into a variety of consumer products such as socks and bedding to help block odours caused by bacteria and mold.

"Patrick Was Not Mad, He Was An Evil Man Sent On A Mission By Powerful People"-Femi Fani Kayode

Politician and social commentator Femi Fani-Kayode has addressed the Patrick Sawyer issue, insisting that Sawyer was an evil man on a wicked mission. Read what he posted on social networking site Facebook this morning below:
"I disagree with those who have described Patrick Sawyer as a madman. He was not mad at all but just evil. He was a man that was on a mission. That mission was to spread the ebola virus to Nigeria and to infect and kill as many people as possible with it.
He was an evil man with an evil intention and purpose. Worst still he was not working alone. Some people, and I mean rich, powerful and well-connected people, were working with him. As a matter of fact they sent him on the mission.
They cultivated him, took care of him, paid him, brainwashed him, gave him all that he wanted in life and finally asked him to go on a suicide mission to destroy the lives of others and spread the deadly disease.

"My Husband Traveled To Nigeria Because He Wanted Better Healthcare"-Wife Of Late Ebola Victim Patrick Sawyer Defends Husband Labelled 'Medical Terrorist'

Patrick Sawyer and wife on wedding day
Many Nigerians have expressed censure and condemned the late Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer for traveling to Nigeria despite knowing that he was carrying Ebola virus before embarking on the trip.
Apart from some describing Sawyer as a “medical terrorist” because it is believed that he came into the country deliberately to spread the disease, President Jonathan on Monday described Sawyer as 'a mad man', calling his action 'pure madness'.
Decontee Sawyer, Sawyer's widow has now defended her husband’s decision to travel to Africa’s most populous country, insisting he was no 'medical terrorist', and adding that he did so because he believed Nigeria had better healthcare system than his own country.
In an article published earlier today, TMZ Liberia Magazine quoted a Facebook post by Decontee, who is a radio host in New York, as explaining that Mr. Sawyer had no trust in the healthcare system in Liberia and had possibly headed to Nigeria with the hope of receiving better treatment for his ailment. Left Hander's Day: Check Out 6 Surprising Discoveries Made By Scientists

Yesterday a blog reader drew my attention to the international 'world's left hander's day'.
Before now, I was unaware that there is a special day set aside for left handed people or that they faced any form of struggle or discrimination. After my attention was drawn I did a little research of my own and here is what I found:
  • August 13th is Left Handers' Day and this year, 2014, will mark the 22nd annual celebration.
  • The first celebration took place in 1976 to promote awareness of left handers' and the struggles they face with the day-to-day products catered towards the right-handed predominant population.
  • It is estimated that up to 10 percent of the world's population are left-handers and even now, many are still discriminated in society for being born that way.
  • Scientists have studied left handers' for a while now to see what differences they boast in comparison to their peers. Check out six surprising discoveries they found after the cut:

A healthcare worker prepares Ebola personal protective equipment before entering the Ebola isolation ward at Kenema Government Hospital, in Kenema, Sierra Leone, 12 August, 2014

Canada says it will donate up to 1,000 doses of an experimental Ebola vaccine to help battle the disease's outbreak in West Africa.
It comes after the World Health Organization said it was ethical to use untested drugs on Ebola patients.
However, experts say supplies of both the vaccine and the experimental drug Zmapp are limited and it could take months to develop more supplies.
More than 1,000 people have been killed by the current outbreak.
Canada says between 800 and 1,000 doses of the vaccine, which has only been tested on animals, will be donated to the World Health Organization (WHO) for use in West Africa.
However, it will keep a small portion of the vaccine for research, and in case it is needed in Canada.

Nigerian Queen Of The Track Slays AGAIN! Blessing Okagbare Wins 100m Gold At Ongoing African Athletics Championship, Sets New Games Record

Okagbare leads Team Nigeria to Morocco
Common wealth champion and Nigeria's queen of the tracks Blessing Okagbare has continued in her trail blazing trend, having won yesterday the 100 m race at the African Athletics Championship. She also set a new games record of 11 seconds.
The sprinting amazon, who blew away strong oppositions at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland to win the double-100 m and 200 m gold-was dominant in Marrekech, Morocco as she powered to glory to erase the former record of 11.03 secs.
Interestingly she ran a faster time at the just concluded common wealth games shattering Bahamas' Debbie Ferguson's record with a time of 10.85seconds.
Speaking after the race, she explained that her body was tired, and understandable so, considering the world class performance she put up at the XX common wealth games.
"I am very happy to have won the title because I just wanted to win for my fans and do my country proud. Just coming straight from the Commonwealth Games, my body is tired, but my coach told me to just focus and execute the race, which was what I did’’, she said moments after the race.
Of course the competition was stiffer at the Commonwealth Games, but that is not to take anything away from Murielle Ahoure. She is a great athlete. It was good that we had three Nigerians in the final but this is Africa. I am hoping that we can have this kind of representation on a bigger platform, like the World Championships and the Olympics"

Murielle Ahoure could not do much to stop Okagbare, with the Ivorian sprinter settling for the silver medal behind the Nigerian.
Two other Nigerians who competed in the 100m finals: Gloria Asumnu and Lawretta Ozoh finished in fourth and sixth positions respectively.
Okagbare by her records has virtually won everything this summer. She won the IAAF Golden League in Lausanne, Switzerland and Monaco and went to the Commonwealth Games where she sent tongues wagging with her her doubles win in the 100 m and the 200 m. She erased the 100m record.
Meanwhile in the men's category,Nigeria's Mark Jelks finished in second position behind Ivory Coast's Koffi Hua Wilfred who won the race in a time of 10.05seconds.
She has since opted out of the 200m event as well as the long jump.

Few days ago, the Federal government declared the Ebola situation a national emergency with President Jonathan said to have approved with immediate effect almost N2 billion to to put in place all necessary measures including proper gear/equipment, health insurance for health workers, to fight the the virus and prevent it from becoming a plague.
Despite all the press releases and announcements, there have been various contrary reports that the government appears to be more proactive in talking than actually taking proper action. The Nigerian medical association further confirmed this at a special press conference yesterday.
Read the report below:
The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives have accused the Federal Government of not being proactive enough in the fight against the Ebola Virus Disease.
The doctors and nurses said at separate news conferences in Lagos on Sunday, that the government had yet to put in place adequate measures to protect health workers willing to manage those infected by the deadly virus.
The state NMA, through its chairman, Dr. Tope Ojo, therefore challenged the federal and Lagos state governments to provide protective kits and address the issue of hazard allowance for doctors, nurses and other health workers ready to be involved in treating infected persons.
